According to CNN’s report, the 2025 Beauty and Personal Care Content Report revealed that high-risk chemicals, such as those found in shampoos, conditioners, foundations, and lipsticks, are still prevalent in beauty products. The hidden dangers not listed on labels have been exposed. Research shows that 52% of 231 cosmetic products sold in the US and Canada contain chemicals known as PFAS. These substances can disrupt hormone balance and are associated with health issues ranging from cancer. Moreover, it was found that 88% of products do not list these chemicals on the labels. Experts emphasize that substances like formaldehyde in hair straighteners are particularly common in products targeting black women, and these chemicals are linked to cancer.
The report also lists the most critical chemicals to watch out for:
Chemical safety expert Heather McKenney stated, “Consumers should not have to figure out which products are safe. This responsibility lies with the manufacturers,” emphasizing the need for the industry to be more transparent.
The organization ChemFORWARD, which prepared the report, mentioned that the percentage of dangerous chemicals has decreased by 2%, and safe formulations are increasing. However, it was still found that around 4% of approximately 50,000 products still contain high-risk ingredients. Experts urged the cosmetic industry to transition to non-toxic formulas, stating, “Looking beautiful should not come at the expense of our health.”
